What We Do In The Shadows: Season 5 (2023) Cre: Jermaine Clement

If you've read my review of season 4, you will know that I ended up taking a long break from watching it, and the show in general, due to a mixture of burnout and disinterest. However, by the end of that season, I was fully back on board. As such, I very keenly carved my way through the fifth and penultimate season.

From the off, there was a definite improvement from the fourth season. I found it a lot funnier, and a whole lot more entertaining from a story standpoint. I thought the episodes were a bit more creative than last season too, at least as a general rule.

I will say though, that I was less enthused by the last episode, which felt like it fell a little flat. I was hoping for a bit more of an exciting climax. It's still pretty entertaining, but I think that prior season finales had been stronger and more exciting.

Something I can't really fault is the performances of the returning cast, who continue to be as joyfully entertaining and funny as ever, particular Natasia Demetriou and Matt Berry. I also appreciated the work of Kayvan Novak and Mark Proksch a nit more this season, while Harvey Guillen and Beanie Feldstein continued to be pretty consistent.

Overall, this was another solid season for Jermaine Clement and his stars, although I did feel the end coming on the horizon, which was later confirmed by the showrunners, as the next season, number six, will be its last.

As much as I have loved parts of the show, it does feel like the right time to let it end. Six seasons is a lot of content, and I think that characters and stories are finally running their course.
