What We Do In The Shadows: Season 4 (2022)
When I finished season 3, I was interested, if a little worried, about the direction the show would take, due to its surprising and fresh cliffhanger ending. However, that ending was essentially retconned and obsolete immediately, as the series instead decided to revert back to the status quo.
The unfortunate effect of this was that my interest in this fourth season reduced quite a bit. I also think I just generally needed a bit of time away from the show. As it turned out, a small break was exactly what I needed, in order to rediscover my love of the show.
Once I returned to continue the season, I found it a lot more enjoyable. Credit where credit is due, I think that did have something to do with the quality of episodes improving in the second half of the season - not only because of my hiatus.
The last few episodes were especially funny, and left me far more satisfied than I was before the break. The one thing that was a slight letdown was that the last episode's ending wasn't as exciting as some of the earlier seasons.
This season thankfully saw a little more character development from the main cast than last season, and the improved performances of said-cast were testament to that. Natasia Demetriou and Matt Berry continue to be my personal favourites, while Kayvan Novak, Harvey Guillen, Mark Proksch and Beanie Feldstein were all pretty fun in their own right.
Overall, I do think this was one of the weaker seasons of the show to date, particularly the first half. However, the second half saw a definite uptick in quality, and I'm glad I came back and finished it, and I will certainly be watching season 5 very soon.
