The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent (2022) Dir: Tom Gornican

Instagram post:

If there was ever going to be an actor who could play themselves and have it just make sense, it would be Nicolas Cage. And this strange action comedy from director Tom Gornican utilises just that idea.

The film doesn't take itself too seriously, and uses this to create a number of truly hilarious moments that broke into mainstream pop culture. Furthermore, it gives audiences the bromance they never knew they needed. The chemistry between the film's co-stars is wonderful, and provides heaps of entertainment.

Speaking of which, as illuded to, Nicolas Cage stars here, and plays an exaggerated version of himself, unsurprisingly, to wild and ridiculous perfection. He was so funny and clearly didn't mind making fun of his past and present self, which only helped in making the film even funnier.

His co-star, and one of the biggest names in film and television of late; Pedro Pascal, provides an eccentric, over-the-top and enjoyable performance that matches the energy of Cage, and even surpasses it at points, to brilliant effect.

Sharon Horgan, while very talented, was not the best casting choice, at least in my view. She wasn't bad in this role, but I did feel as though the character would have suited a different actor. Her performance itself was decent enough though.

Tiffany Haddish was great as one of the key supporting characters, and had some very funny moments throughout her relatively limited screentime.

I'll also give quick mentions to Lily Mo Sheen, Alessandra Mastronardi, Ike Barinholtz and Neil Patrick Harris, who have small but entertaining roles.

Overall, this film is a whole lot of fun, and had much more of a functional story behind it than I had expected. This is a film for fans of Nicolas Cage, and a film for fans of utterly ridiculous comedy.
