Dawn Of The Dead (2004) Dir: Zack Snyder

Instagram post:

It's been a little while since I've watched a zombie film, so this 2004 remake, directed by Zack Snyder, felt like a good one to watch. Based on George A. Romero's 1978 classic, and written by James Gunn, this is quintessential zombie horror.

It features a great soundtrack and some really solid physical effects, which are two of the most important factors in making a successful zombie film.

The story is pretty par for the course for the genre, which is not a bad thing. The zombies feel threatening and dangerous, and no one feels safe, which is not something every film is the genre is able to manage.

Sarah Polley makes for a decent, if not spectacular, protagonist. I think she had a strong first act, but fell away slightly towards the end.

Ving Rhames, who was one of only two cast members I recognised, provided my favourite performance of the film. I liked how he managed to show two sides of his character throughout the film, making certain that both worked well.

Jake Weber was another who gave a pretty solid showing, although there were definitely times where he lacked an on-screen presence, which made it feel like he lacked any significant charisma.

I'd also like to mention a number of supporting cast members who I felt were noteworthy; Kim Poirer, Modern Family's Ty Burrell, Kevin Zegers, Lindy Booth and Michael Kelly.

Overall, this is a really solid zombie film that entertains easily and uses its premise to create plenty of suspense for the audience. It's definitely up there among the better zombie films I've seen.
