Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Season 7 (2020) Cre: Dave Filoni
Several years after the cancellation of this immensely popular animated show, Disney acquiesced to fan pressure and released a seventh and final season of this excellent series in 2020. And while it was long overdue, it was more than worth the wait.
This season has, as you would expect, an updated version of the animation, which is more high resolution and altogether better than the older seasons. This makes every important visual of the season that much more impactful.
Despite it being the final season, and only 12 episodes, there are still a number of new characters introduced, including 'Clone Force 99', or 'The Bad Batch', who of course would later get a spin-off show of their own, with the same animation style.
The storylines for these 12 episodes are all strong, but the final four in particular are some of the best of the entire show, especially 11 and 12. The music for those last two episodes is incredible, with some of it resembling the likes of Blade Runner in its dramatic, dystopian and eerie sound.
I will always consider the final two scenes of the show to be perfect. The emotion created through those images is immense and well earned. The tragedy of the show comes to fruition in a beautifully devastating pair of scenes. Every time I rewatch those last moments, it reminds me why I think it is one of the best endings to a TV show ever.
Season 1 first aired in 2008, twelve years and seven season later, fans of the show bore witness to the end of one of the most beloved and consistent additions to the Star Wars franchise.
The evolution from lighthearted children's animation, to heartwrenching and dark animation, speaks not only of the show growing up, but a recognition that so has most of its fan base.
I first watched The Clone Wars when I was a child. By the time the show ended, I was an adult. It was satisfying to see the show had matured with me, even if it still maintained the core features of what made the earlier seasons so good.
