Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Season 5 (2013) Cre: Dave Filoni

Season 5 of Dave Filoni's epic animated series, serves as a reminder that, at its heart, this is a television series aimed at a children's audience. However, there is still plenty of the darker, more serious content that has made this such a rewatchable and ever-popular show.

The episodes are hugely varied, perhaps more so than prior seasons, with storylines ranging from the sinister and political, to the downright bizarre. But one thing remains the same; the enjoyment I felt watching each episode. The Mandalore episodes are particularly good, with some superb moments.

There are number of huge shocks in this season, with multiple series mainstays being killed off or undergoing major changes throughout the season, especially in the later episodes. While this could certainly have backfired, I thoroughly enjoyed it, as it made the episodes feel like perilous and vital viewing.

The final few episodes are raught with conspiracy and intrigue, allowing the show to fully transition into the more serious themes that have steadily growing from season to season. I for one loved this at the time the series came out, as well as upon my rewatch all these years later.

The final moments of season 5 are truly heartwrenching, with an outcome I doubt many, if any, fans saw coming at the time it all played out. Even a decade later, it hit home for me again, such is the impact of the final scenes.

Overall, the second half of this season is one of my all-time collection of episodes in the whole show. The way the two big arcs build and play out is phenomenal. The arcs get better and better as the season progressed, and gives its audience so much to cling to, no matter the age.
