Judas And The Black Messiah (2021) Dir: Shaka King

Instagram post:

In 2021, director Shaka King provided audiences with a brutal and intensely emotional historical drama that is full of tragedy and emotion. I was amazed by the focused, uncompromising portrayal of an intensely important moment in American civil history.

This film is a memorial to a movement and the flame of a new one. It was so enriching, and enthralling in equal parts. The narrative is told in riveting and devastating fashion, and finds itself propelled firmly by its two incredibly talented lead actors.

Lakeith Stanfield is criminally underrated. I think he is, at times, one of the best actors working today. And his performance in this film is worthy of that notion. He was conflicted, emotional and believable - a true treat to behold.

He was only upstaged by arguably the best actor under thirty right now in Daniel Kaluuya. His performance was world class and transcendent of the story. He was charismatic, multidimensional and utterly entrancing. What an actor.

Dominique Fishback was phenomenal in her supporting role. I found her endearing, interesting and very watchable from an acting standpoint.

Jesse Plemons is so good at being a subtly horrible character, and he absolutely nailed those elements of his character once again. I was thoroughly impressed.

Credit belongs to the likes of Ashton Sanders, Algee Smith, Dominique Thorne, Khris Davis and Martin Sheen, for their supporting performances.

Overall, I think this film should be considered a modern classic, and I'm sure in time that it will receive even more acclaim. Shaka King has a masterpiece to his name with this incredible film.
