Invincible: Season 3 (2025) Cre: Robert Kirkman

Instagram post:

It had felt like such a long time since the second season of this popular animated series, created by Robert Kirkman, had hit Prime, and truthfully, my interest had weaned a little, despite how much I had enjoyed the previous seasons. Regardless, I did, eventually, start this third season, and was optimistic that the quality of the show would still be there.

The animation was on par with that of the previous two seasons, which is to say; it was extremely good. I love this style of animation, particularly in conjunction with the vivid use of colour with characters and their powers. The action sequences were, as had been the case before, extremely well-animated, and the gruesome, violent nature of them only emphasised the shocking and dark nature of some of the storyline developments.

As far as the narrative was concerned, I thought that the season opener was a little slow, and perhaps not as exciting as the prior two seasons, although, in fairness, it would be hard to beat the truly stellar pilot for this series - one of the best I've seen. The full-season arc also fell a little short of the other two, in my opinion. It felt like there was a lot more filler, although, it must be said, I did enjoy the developments for some of the secondary characters.

The final two episodes were very good, but I wished there had been a little more interconnectedness across the season as a whole. The positive slant is that this season left a lot of potential directions for season four, and most of them appealed to me greatly. This was definitely a little bit of a hot and cold season, but at least the hot moments were extremely good, and the cold ones were, at worst, lukewarm.

Steven Yeun continued his excellent work as the voice of the titular 'Invincible' - I am such a big fan of his skills as an actor, and his presence on any cast is a welcome one for me. Even in a voice-only role, he is able to evoke strong emotions for his character and their struggles. This season also marked another strong showing for the ever-talented J.K. Simmons, who, despite a fairly limited role this season, was exemplary once again.

Gillian Jacobs went from strength to strength, as her role continued to develop in fascinating fashion, whilst the likes of Walton Goggins, Seth Rogen, Lauren Cohen, Mark Hamill, Sandra Oh, Zachary Quinto, Aaron Paul, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Jason Mantzoukas, all delivered really decent voice-acting performances, particularly those last three names, who had some genuinely incredible moments.

Overall, I thought this was a good but troubled season of television, which highlighted both the strengths and weaknesses of this show in abundance. I love so much about this series, but I really hope season four feels a lot more focused than this one did. With that said, if this show continues to excel with its action sequences and character development, then it will most definitely be worth watching. Season four has a lot of potential, that much is certain.
