Invincible: Season 2 - Part 1 (2023) Cre: Robert Kirkman

Instagram post:

The first season of this Robert Kirkman created show, which has been reviewed on this blog previously, was excellent. I couldn't wait for the follow up, especially after the thrilling cliffhanger ending we were left with. The only slight dampener was that only the first half of this new season would be released this year, with the second half not arriving until 2024.

It was always going to be difficult to top the epic storyline of season one. For what it's worth, once the storyline got going for season two, it was pretty good. Naturally, having only seen the first half of the season, I can't fully assess how strong it is on the whole, but the first half has been promising.

Steven Yeun has been, and continues to be, one of the highlights of the show. He is a great protagonist, and is able to make his character very likable and relatable, while also evoking plenty of emotion when need be - which is pretty often.

J.K. Simmons has a much smaller part so far, compared to season one, but that doesn't stop him from once more being one of the best things about it. Simmons provides another excellent vocal performance as one of the show's best characters.

Zazie Beetz was unfortunate to have writing that made her character pretty unlikable at times in the first season, but that hadn't stopped her actual performance from being a good one. The same can be said here, though, thankfully, she was written to be a lot more endearing this time around.

Gillian Jacobs didn't have all that much to do this season, aside from a special origin story episode that was technically not part of the season - but I'm counting it. She was pretty good, but I would've loved if she had been able to do a lot more.

Sandra Oh, on the other hand, had so much more to do this time around - something I was very happy to see. She was pretty good throughout the first half of the season. She has become one of the show's best characters.

I was also quite impressed by a number of the supporting cast, namely Walton Goggins, Jason Mantzoukas, Malese Jow, Seth Rogan, Kevin Michael Richardson, Grey DeLisle and Zachary Quinto.

Overall, I enjoyed the first half of this new season a lot, although I wouldn't say it quite reaches the levels of the first season, which would be pretty difficult to do, in fairness. However, I still think this has been pretty strong so far, and I'm excited to see the second half of the season.
