What We Did On Our Holiday (2014) Dir: Guy Jenkin & Andy Hamilton

It's safe to say this was an unexpectedly enjoyable film. Early on, it felt like it would be a bit forgettable, but there were plenty of heartwarming and funny moments to make this something I'm glad I sat down and watched.
Directors Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton hit the right notes for both the comedy and drama aspects of the story, although they perhaps don't reach the emotional heights that I think they could have.
David Tennant and Rosamund Pike provide believable and solid characters whose chemistry is clear and illicit some decent laughs and emotion from the audience.
Billy Connolly very quietly gives a really good performance - his jokes land the best, his heartfelt moments hit deeper and he was, all-in-all, the most likable character.
Ben Miller must have had a great time with his character, and played it very well, although he did get a little one-note at times.
The young trio of Harriet Turnbull, Emilia Jones and Bobby Smalldridge all turned out very commendable displays, considering their age, and while the writing of their dialogue felt a little clunky, they were still endearing characters.
I'll also give very quick mentions to Amelia Bullmore and Celia Imrie, whose roles were minor but enjoyable enough.
Overall, this was a simple, heartwarming comedy with plenty of drama. It very much felt like a typical piece of independent British cinema, in a good way. It was an easy watch, it had some sad and silly moments, but I doubt it will stick with me for too long.
