Star Wars: Tales Of The Underworld (2025) Cre: Dave Filoni

Instagram post:

It is no secret that, for most people, the Disney Star Wars projects have been very hit or miss. However, some of the creations that I have enjoyed pretty consistently have been these Dave Filoni created 'Tales Of' mini-series. I enjoyed the last two sets, and found that they complimented both the previous 'Star Wars' shows, and the characters they explored, really nicely. There's only six episodes per series, and they're around fifteen minutes each, which makes them very easy to watch in short order.

A return to the popular animation style used in 'The Clone Wars' series is always an immediate plus for me. Not only is it nostalgic for me and those who grew up woth that brilliant animated series, but it still looks really good, and has only been updated slightly to improve the general quality of it. The style fits, it works, and there's no need to change it, so it's nice to see it being used so consistently.

The series was comprised of two three-episode arcs, which filled in some of the gaps in their respective character's journeys and histories. Of the two, I think I preferred Bane's, simply because more of the story of Ventress after 'The Clone Wars' was known already. With that said, I still very much enjoyed the details that were added to her story, that continued to develop a richer, more complete version of the character.

Nika Futterman and Corey Burton return to their popular 'Star Wars' voice acting roles with the same commitment and energy as they had done so regularly previously. It was very cool to hear them, and see their characters, back again. Quick mentions should also go to Artt Butler and Lane Factor for their appearances as new characters in the Disney Star Wars lore. I thought they did a really decent job, particularly Butler.

Overall, I found myself once again pleased by this set of short stories, and the extra nuggets of backstory and information they reveal. What's great about these mini-series is not only that they can be watched in an afternoon, but that they actively seek to expand the lore of the characters they explore. This is especially appreciated when it's characters who haven't featured as heavily in other productions outside of 'The Clone Wars'. I hope Disney provides more of these in the future, because they really are enjoyable little extras that I find really interesting.
