Prometheus (2012) Dir: Ridley Scott

Instagram post:

This 2012 film marked acclaimed director Ridley Scott's return to the franchise that he built back in 1979. It is less of an 'Alien' film than it is a science fiction horror set in the same universe. It is also set before the original film takes place, therefore classifying as a prequel.

Visually, the film is absolutely phenomenal, thanks to the work of cinematographer Dariusz Wolski. The soundtrack is also fantastic, suiting, as well as building on, the aesthetics and themes of the film.

Narratively, this is a very well written story that builds slowly, increasing in tension and intrigue until it reaches a shocking climax. I like how it feels separate to the Alien franchise, without being in an altogether different universe.

Noomi Rapace stars here - she is an actress I was unfamiliar with prior to her appearance in this, and I have to say I found her performance to be absolutely exceptional.

The only actor who did even better was the prodigious Michael Fassbender, who gave what was essentially a perfect performance as far as I'm concerned. He suited his character brilliantly and was an inspired casting choice.

Another strong performance comes from the iconic Idris Elba, who seems to excell in whatever role he ends up doing. He may only have been a supporting actor here, but I thoroughly enjoyed him nonetheless.

Charlize Theron conducts herself well, providing an intriguing, almost villainous, protagonist for the main characters.

Finally, there were a number of supporting cast members worthy of note, those being the likes of Logan Marshall-Green, Guy Pearce, Benedict Wong, Sean Harris and Ian Whyte; who some will know as the man inside the predator costumes.

Overall, this is, in my view, the best film in the franchise since the 1979 original, or at least the 1986 sequel.

Ridley Scott masters the art of mixing science fiction and horror to create a suspenseful, mysterious and excellently enthralling prequel worthy of the franchise.
