Night Stalker: The Hunt For A Serial Killer (2021) Dir Tiller Russell & James Carroll

Letterboxd post:

This was one of the better Netflix true crime documentaries that have been produced in recent years. It follows the horrifying events surrounding the infamous Richard Ramirez; The Night Stalker.

His terrifying spree of assaults and killings caused a wave of terror throughout California in 1985. The limited series features interviews from a variety of sources, including those heading up the investigation; Gil Carrillo and Frank Salerno.

Directed by Tiller Russell and James Carroll, this series manages to transcribe the events of the case well, balancing up the facts and objective truths of Ramirez's actions and the inevitable dramatisation needed to create an enthralling series.

The soundtrack was perhaps unusual for a true crime series in that some of it was very 80s and very funky. But to be clear, I actually quite enjoyed it.

Ultimately, this series was a very well crafted documentary that was easy to watch and told the story in a convincing and intriguing fashion.
