Little Women (2019) Dir: Greta Gerwig

Instagram post:

The story is one of literature's most famous tales, written by Louisa May Alcott, originally published in 1868, and has spawned many cinematic releases over the decades, with the earliest dating back to the 1910s. Over 100 years later comes this Greta Gerwig directed effort.

I have vague memories of the 1994 release, but I must admit, the story was all but gone from my mind. This 2019 release had a tremendous cast and a strong directorial vision which helped to create a wonderful period adaptation.

Saoirse Ronan is superb in her starring role, and has some wonderful chemistry with her colleagues. Having seen her in a role where she was far younger, her development as an actress was clear to see.

Florence Pugh is one of the most talented young actors in the industry today, and her performance here is a brilliant example of why. Her ability to show a wide array of emotion is almost second to none at times and her delivery of dialogue is remarkably curated.

The young icon that is Emma Watson also has a substantial role here, and while she may not give as strong a performance as the two aforementioned actresses, she does still do very well among some of the Hollywood elite of today.

Timothée Chalamet, the man who seems to appear in half of all Hollywood films these days, justifies his casting with an immense and varied performance that sees much of his talent put on display.

The legendary Meryl Streep may only have a supporting role, but her natural elegance and poise, as well as pure talent, allows her to make every minute she has count.

Eliza Scanlen has a good showing in her supporting role, although she can't quite reach the immense heights of her co-stars.

I'll also mention Laura Dern, Louis Garrel, Bob Odenkirk, Tracy Letts and Chris Cooper who all warranted a mention.

Overall, while period films are not exactly my first choice in watches, this was a thoroughly enjoyable, well made and quality film that deserves the immense praise it has received.
