We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011) Dir: Lynne Ramsay

Instagram post:

This BBC produced film is one everyone seems to know the name of, but not a lot have actually seen; myself included - that is, until recently.

The film is initially a little confusing, although thankfully this is all part of the imagery focused nature of much of the film, and the narrative and message becomes far clearer by the end of it. The cinematography is typical of most independent films; simple but effective.

There is, as illuded to, a lot of intriguing imagery throughout the runtime - I admittedly did a little research post-watch to understand some of it better - but it's all pretty smart and relevant. The narrative itself is winding and slow, but once it reaches its harrowing climax, what's left is a superb thriller of a story that leaves you shocked.

Tilda Swinton is incredible and delivers a truly masterful portrayal of a paranoid mother. This is the best performance I've seen from her in any film so far. It was genuinely superb.

The unfortunately now controversial figure of Ezra Miller also plays a substantial role here, and they did a really commendable job at portraying their character's immensely interesting personality. Credit must also go to Jasper Newell and Rock Duer who play younger versions of Miller's character.

John C. Reilly gives a surprisingly solid and appropriate performance here. I must admit I am not always a big fan of his work, but he does very well here.

Finally, I'll give credit to Ashley Gerasimovich who does well with a relatively small supporting role.

Overall, I think director Lynne Ramsay did a phenomenal job to craft a disturbing yet undeniably enthralling film that I honestly think is a fantastic example of how good independent cinema can be.
