Fred And Rose West: A British Horror Story (2025) Dir: Daniel Dewsbury

If you're from the UK, the chances are that you will be familiar with the names, of Fred and Rose West. It is undoubtedly one of the most infamous and disturbing true crime cases in British history, and, as such, it has been the subject of an extensive array of true crime documentaries, with this Netflix produced three-part limited series being the latest.

This particular docu-series used a lot of interesting archival footage and audio snippets, much of which was very rare, to explore the unraveling of the West couple's crimes. I would have liked it if the series had explored more about the childhoods of the two killers - the psychology of them is one of the most intriguing aspects of the whole case, and this series barely addressed it at all.

I didn't feel like the case provided anything new, other than some admittedly very intriguing archive footage. However, I'm not sure that was enough to warrant an entirely new series to rehash the trauma and horror that the victims and their loved ones faced at the cruel hands of Fred and Rose West. I can understand that, with the release of new footage, it can be tempting to tell the same story anew, but I can't help but feel for those who must then relive all those awful events once again.

Overall, I found this to be a relatively fascinating, and yet not entirely fulfilling three-part series. I guess it was interesting to have a refresher on the case, but people with a more avid true crime fascination and degree of knowledge will find little of note beyond the same information that has been covered many times before. True crime series should attempt to say something meaningful about the cases they are covering, but I'm not entirely sure that this one did.
