Bridget Jones's Diary (2001) Dir: Sharon Maguire

Based on the book of the same name by Helen Fielding, this 2001 British romcom classic is a sure-fire entertainer from start to finish. Directed by Sharon Maguire, this film is packed full of hilarious moments and witty jokes that will consistently make audiences laugh, even on rewatches, as this was in my case.

The story is rather silly, but quintessentially and undeniably British romcom material. Although, that is by no means a negative point. On the contrary, it makes for plenty of fun.

Renée Zellweger stars, and plays the archetypal fool joyously well. She had some marvellous timing throughout the film and was both endearing and entertaining.

Hugh Grant provides a performance that is typical of him in the early 2000s; he is charismatic, devilishly witty and infinitely smooth.

Colin Firth, on the other hand, excels in delivering his very recognisable awkward Englishman persona - which works incredibly well opposite Grant.

Finally, I'll mention some of the charming array of talent in the supporting cast; Jim Broadbent, Gemma Jones, Sally Phillips, James Callis, Shirley Henderson, Celia Imrie, Embeth Davidtz and James Faulkner.

Overall, this is a must watch British romcom for just about anyone. It is full of iconic comedy moments and cheeky wit to keep audiences giggling away time after time.
