Beetlejuice (1988) Dir: Tim Burton

When you think of the goth subculture, as it pertains to film, there are a few examples that spring to mind. One of the first that does is always this.

Directed by Tim Burton, this quirky comedy ticks all the boxes that make for a memorable 80s classic; wonderful physical effects, flamboyant comedy and a host of unique little sequences and set design. It's perfectly symptomatic of the 80s, especially with Burton's visual style and flamboyance.

Alec Baldwin and Greena Davis star, and both provide entertaining performances characterised by a commitment to the silliness of the story and a good on-screen connection.

Winona Ryder is another to have a good showing, with her natural talent allowing her to excell in a role that has left a longlasting positive impression on audiences.

Michael Keaton is, of course, the star of the show here, playing the unhinged character from which the film takes its name. His performance is excellently bizarre and out there.

I loved how ridiculously he portrayed the character - he overacted just enough to make the role as over-the-top as it needed to be.

I'll also mention Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Jones, who were all terrifically funny in their own right in their respective supporting roles.

Overall, I will always have a soft spot for this film. It's so delightfully creative and funny, it's almost impossible not to love its cheesy entertainment.
