Ash Vs Evil Dead: Season 3 (2018) Cre: Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi & Tom Spezialy

Instagram post:

The final season of the cult horror series, created by Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi, and Tom Spezialy, hit televisions in 2018, and would mark the final live-action appearance of Bruce Campbell as 'Ashy Slashy', as he has become affectionately known. This show has grown on me a fair bit since I started watching it, and while it's never been particularly well-written, it has been extremely amusing and entertaining.

I think this is the season I enjoyed the most, on the whole. It was certainly the most cohesive story, and arguably the funniest, at least to my taste. I also thought this season saw the most character development of the three, and made each character's arc feel a lot more important than some of them had prior to that point.

The writing, relatively speaking, was fairly good, for the most part. The ending was a bit much, but I chose to see the fun side rather than the ridiculous side, on this occasion. This has been a show that never took itself too seriously, and while it's silliness has meant its lacked some of the credibility of other shows, it has never been short of comedic merit.

Bruce Campbell marked his final series of appearances of his iconic 'Ash Williams' character 'in the flesh', so-to-speak, with some of his most absurdly enjoyable performances to-date. It was clear that Campbell wanted to give this final season his all, and he went full 'Ashy Slashy', in all of his bloody glory.

Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo gave some of their best performances of the show in this season, and even though I still don't think they have been particularly great from an acting point of view, I have enjoyed their involvement in the show. I also enjoyed the appearances of Lucy Lawless, Arielle O'Neill, and the briefly appearing, but funny, Lee Majors.

Overall, I actually thought this was a really enjoyable final season of what became an absurdly entertaining series. The writing hasn't always been all that good, but I have found the comedically gratuitous violence and ridiculously crass humour to be well worth my time. I do think this shoe had reached its natural conclusion, but it's still sad to see the end of 'Ash Williams', at least in a live-action sense.
