Ash Vs Evil Dead: Season 2 (2016) Cre: Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi & Tom Spezialy

Instagram post:

I recently zoomed through the first season of this Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi, and Tom Spezialy created series, and had enjoyed it a fair amount, although I had also found plenty of issues with it. Despite this, I was still very much looking forward to watching this second of three seasons, and knew that it would almost certainly be entertaining, if not exceptional.

The show maintained its intensely Raimi style, which had, unsurprisingly, typified the first season so much. I quite enjoyed the chaotic and absurd nature of some of the visuals - the practical effects used throughout the show's ten episodes were really fun. Some of it might look cheesy, but it suits the feel of the show perfectly.

The story felt a lot more episodic in nature, up until the last few episodes, which did at least bring a little more cohesion to the fore. I think some of the individual episodes of this season were better than those in the last one, but the overarching story wasn't quite as interesting. Either way, it was pretty entertaining.

Bruce Campbell continued to showcase his particular brand of charisma and cheekiness, while both Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo improved quite substantially, when compared to their work in the previous season. I also thought that Lucy Lawless got a little better. Much like the first season, I won't say that anyone gave particularly premier performances, but they sure were entertaining.

Overall, this was a fairly good sophomore season, which certainly built on the entertaining, if shaky, foundations provided by the first season. Despite its issues, much the same as that prior season, this has been a fun show to watch. It's silly, it's gory, and it's very fun. It certainly did enough to encourage me to watch the show's final season.
