The Sixth Sense (1999) Dir: M. Night Shyamalan

You could be forgiven for not bothering to watch this if you haven't already, seeing as the film contains perhaps one of the single most well known twists in cinema history, as well as one of the most recognisable quotes.

However, if that is the case I would say you are missing out on what is a very well crafted mystery thriller. Even though I already knew the twist, it did not ruin the quality of the narrative, or my appreciation for the slowly built suspense.

Bruce Willis stars in what is without a doubt one of his best performances. His ability to show a tenderness and sincerity comes to the fore as he has great chemistry with the young Haley Joel Osment.

Speaking of Osment, he himself delivers a brilliant performance - he manages to show the duality of his character's personality very effectively and doesn't shy away from what is a very big and challenging role for a child actor.

Olivia Williams is solid in her supporting role, though at times her acting leaves a little to be desired.

Finally, I'll mention Toni Collette, who did superbly in her role, and was another member of the cast to work very well with Osment.

Overall, I would say this is easily the best work of the often devisive director M. Night Shyamalan, who crafts and delivers a brilliant horror that became so iconic that everyone knows it, even if they haven't seen it.

Despite its infamous twist being so known, it is still well worth sitting down to watch. If anything, knowledge of the twist just makes you look at the little details and giveaways all the more.
