Directed by Grègory Levasseur, this 2014 horror was another one of those slightly random films that had been sat on one of my many watchlists for quite a while. It does not have particularly encouraging reviews, but I still wanted to watch it, mainly because it sounded like it could be a bit of goofy fun. Plus, I actually don't hate the premise of a mysterious pyramid with something horrifying within, so I thought I'd take my chances with it.
Sometimes, you have to acknowledge when you're wrong, and I was wrong about this film having any entertainment value whatsoever. It was dreadful. I found myself asking what the point of shooting and presenting the film as a found footage documentary was, when half the shots weren't even from the faux-cameras. Found footage horror works when you commit to it, but this one did not. Matters weren't helped by the truly awful CGI, which felt straight out of a very poor nineties film. It's safe to say that this was extremely lazy, uncreative, and underwhelming, and not just from a filmmaking perspective.
The writing was woeful, including the dialogue, which was wholly uninspired and unrealistic. The characters were all extremely irritating, and I felt like bashing my head against the wall listening to them talk absolute waffle to one another - it really was that bad. It didn't help that the virtually non-existent narrative was just as painful to sit-through. It made the film feel like it was lasting forever. I was so relieved when it was over.
None of the acting was any good whatsoever, but, of the key cast members, Ashley Hinshaw was the least poor, which really wasn't a high bar. James Buckley, of 'The Inbetweeners', produced some of the most annoying and artificial sounding dialogue I've ever heard in a film, whilst Denis O'Hare, Amir K, and Christa Nicola, all failed to do anything remotely positive.
Overall, I can't help but feel silly having come into this hoping for something even remotely entertaining. This was an almost unbearable film to watch, and I can't imagine ever wanting to watch it again, even to make fun of it. The film had virtually no redeeming factors. If you want to watch a dumb pyramid film that's actually fun; try the first 'Alien Vs. Predator' film instead.
