The Nice Guys (2016) Dir: Shane Black

Everyone and their grandmother has been telling me to watch this Shane Black directed crime comedy. I don't know why it took me so long to watch it, but I was happy to finally get around to it. With how much my peers were recommending it, I was expecting at the very least to have a good time.
I quite enjoyed the editing of the film, as well as some of the camerawork. It gave it quite a bit of flair, especially during the action sequences. All of this came together in a very satisfying way, especially in conjunction with the action and physical comedy sequences.
I liked the comedy a lot - it was very amusing, if a little repetitive in nature sometimes. That said, the actors all fed into and off of it so well that it was very easy to enjoy. The physical comedy aspects had me laughing quite a bit, particularly those involving Gosling.
The plot was somewhat built on convenience, but it was undeniably full of entertainment. The mystery element was interesting, if a little random, but on the whole, I found myself enjoying the story quite a bit. It's a definitely a film that's more built upon the performances of its two leading men, but regardless, it's very easy to watch.
Ryan Gosling was so good. His high pitched screams were hilarious, and his comedic timing was immaculate. I think Gosling's comedy ability has been pretty underrated in the past, but this is a great example of why he can be very funny with the right screenplay.
Russell Crowe is not really a guy I'd peg to be a successful comedy actor, but he really makes it work in this one. His chemistry with Gosling is brilliant, and he produces plenty of laughs in his own right too. He seemed very into the story, and it showed in his performance.
The young Angourie Rice was a very pleasant surprise. I found her delightful, cheeky and very naturally funny. She looked comfortable in the role, and had great chemistry with both Gosling and Crowe. Her confidence was very enjoyable, and her energy was infectious.
Of the supporting cast, I thought that there were a few that deserved mentions. I was most impressed by the talented Margaret Qualley, in one of her earlier feature film roles. However, I will also give credit to the likes of Matt Bomer, Yaya DaCosta, Keith David and Beau Knapp, for their various performances.
Overall, I thought this was a really entertaining crime comedy. It wasn't perfect, but I laughed a lot, and I was very glad that I chose to watch. It's definitely one I can see myself revisiting in the future, even if it's just to have a relaxed night in type of viewing experience. If anything, it's worth it just to watch Ryan Gosling's screams and whelps.
