The Karate Kid (1984) Dir: John G. Alvidsen

Instagram post:

This is a film I remember watching over 10 years ago and absolutely loving. All this time later, I watched it again, and truthfully, I loved it just as much. It's such an iconic film with a fantastic story with a huge amount of heart.

Director John G. Alvidsen presents to us an incredibly heartwarming film, which has an emphasis on self-belief and discipline. The highs and lows of the narrative work so well, particularly a very heartbreaking moment near the midpoint, as well, of course, as the climax of the story.

Ralph Macchio stars, producing a varied and endearing performance that showed a lot of heart and commitment to the role. Furthermore, he works very well with his co-star.

Speaking of whom, Pat Morita plays the iconic Mr Miyagi - and epitomises why the character is so memorable and loved. He, like Macchio, shows plenty of variety in his performance, particularly in the second act.

William Zabka plays the key antagonist, and takes on the role with gusto. He embodies that typical 80s American bully insanely well and provides a good and threatening villain to the story.

Elisabeth Shue has some strong on-screen chemistry with Macchio, but also manages to provide a very solid performance in what is a key supporting role.

Randee Heller is another of the supporting cast who gives a good performance, she has a few moments where her comedic timing is really good - making for some of the funnier scenes of the film. Finally, I'll quickly mention Martin Kove, who makes for a scary antagonist, despite having very little screentime.

Overall, this will always be one of my favourite films, it's just so entertaining and easy to invest in. The final act is just so well done and has one of the most iconic moments in 80s cinema.
