The Holiday (2006) Dir: Nancy Meyers

Instagram post:

With Christmas bearing down upon us, it's that time of year where seasonal films become the norm for audiences around the world, and I figured this Nancy Meyers directed 2006 romcom was a reasonable enough place to start.

As you'd expect, the film is full of cheesy romance and silly comedy, all which is wonderfully absurd. The star-studded cast excell in providing audiences with plenty of laughs, and there's some lovely chemistry all around. Additionally, the music of Hanz Zimmer softly accompanies the events rather wonderfully.

If there was ever an example of female gaze, then this would most likely be it. It was a very well-written story with so much wholesome content for all to enjoy. The film balances the Christmas, the romance and the comedy superbly, which means that the film is really nicely poised.

Kate Winslet proves why she is such a beloved actress, with what is an extremely endearing and entertaining performance. I adore her sincere, innocent portrayal, and she, for me, is the best actor in the film.

Jack Black has always been a lovable goof, and this is perhaps one of the finest examples of such a thing. He has so much personality, and he manages to show some marvellous kindness and

Cameron Diaz gives one of her most enjoyable all-round performances, in a role that looked so fun to play. She nailed the comedy of her character, but also provided her fair share of heartfelt scenes too. I thoroughly enjoyed her from start to finish.

Jude Law took the role of the attractive Englishman, one that he plays exceedingly well. He is cheeky, handsome and very witty. His chemistry with Diaz is off the charts, and he thrives with his scenes with her.

The duo of Eli Wallach and Rufus Sewell both provide some interesting performances deserving of favourable attention. I was especially fond of Wallach, who had a delightful presence to him.

Finally, I'll give mentions to Emma Pritchard, John Kransinski, Kathryn Hahn and Edward Burns, who each provide reasonable performances in relatively minor roles. There were also some random appearances from Lindsey Lohan and James Franco, which were strange but fun.

Overall, this was a heartwarming and well-written romantic comedy with lots of gumption. There are plenty of laughs throughout and the story will leave you with a smile on your face.
