Star Wars: Ahsoka (2023) Cre: Dave Filoni
Instagram post:
When this, the latest of Dave Filoni's Star Wars productions was announced, I was a little bit worried - mainly due to concerns with the necessity and quality of the story, fears only worsened by the good, but not great results of other Star Wars series in the last couple of years.
However, those fears were almost immediately put to bed by the first two episodes, which felt fresh, important and well thought out. The series is full of reference and inference to other Star Wars stories, especially the popular animated series; 'Star wars: Rebels'.
I was very satisfied by the cinematography and evident budget put into the show - it helped the series feel important, not just in terms of the narrative, but in terms of the perception of the studio behind it.
What's more, I loved how new and exciting just about everything felt in the show, which quite literally took Star Wars to places it had never been before. The only slightly disappointing thing for me was that the two most interesting characters didn't really feature in the final episode.
Rosario Dawson felt like a stable face for the series, and presented audiences with a more refined version of a character that many in the Star Wars community have come to love. I for one enjoyed her performances throughout the series.
Natasha Liu Bordizzo was fairly decent, but I think she needed a bit more personality, certainly by the end of the series. She was just a little bit too samey at times, but all-in-all she was pretty good.
The late Ray Stevenson was imperious, intimidating and intensely intriguing throughout his time on-screen. He had a presence to him that felt as sinister and cunning as the Sith should.
By contrast, Ivanna Sakhno gave the show something entirely different to that of her on-screen ally. She was fiery, intense and ambitious - a juxtaposition that worked so well with Stevenson.
Of the remaining supporting cast, the likes of David Tennant, Dianna Lee Inosanto and Mary Elizabeth Winstead deserve the most credit, and provided the best performances.
More positive displays came from the exciting trio of Eman Esfandi, Lars Mikkelsen and Hayden Christensen.
Quick mentions go the way of Evan Whitten, Genevieve O'Reilly and Temuera Morrison for their small but memorable and most welcome performances.
Overall, I don't think it is a far reach to say that this was the best Disney Star Wars series to date, including, for me personally, the first season of The Mandalorian. I was so happy with this first season and I truly hope we get a season 2.
