Sonic The Hedgehog (2020) Dir: Jeff Fowler

Instagram post:

Recently I've been getting back into more family friendly adventure films, and this one has been on my radar a little while now.

Directed by Jeff Fowler, this film has a really fun and upbeat feel to it, which is matched by the energy of the cast. The narrative is pretty basic, as you'd expect of most family films, but it functions well enough.

Ben Schwartz stars as the iconic hedgehog here, and gives a decent if not overly special vocal performance.

Supporting him is James Marsden, who was quite enjoyable as the main human - his character helped to carry the narrative and create subplots, which no doubt was necessary here.

Jim Carrey steals this movie though, his version of Dr. Robotnik is so entertaining and over the top. Carrey shows a good blend of his iconic over-acting and slightly more serious performing. He was easily the best character here.

As films based on video games go, this one isn't bad at all. It encapsulates the fun and excitement you would expect from a Sonic adventure. I really enjoyed watching this and I'd happily watch the sequel.
