Short Circuit (1986) Dir: John Badham

Instagram post:

I, like many others, have a lot of love for the 80s and its film scene. The quirkiness and often silly antics making for a huge variety of fun and hilarious stories. And this 1986 John Badham directed science fiction comedy is no different.

The story is okay, it doesn't blow me away or anything but it serves its purpose. The physical effects are also pretty good, which is something I always enjoy.

Ally Sheedy, who many will recognise from another 80s classic: The Breakfast club, provides a fun and confident performance as the film's main protagonist.

She works well with what is essentially a remote control co-star, which is not necessarily an easy thing.

Tim Blaney voices said robot, and gives it a huge amount of character with his performance, allowing him to be extremely endearing.

Steve Guttenburg is, unfortunately, rather mediocre in his supporting role. He seemed to lack any real charisma or stage presence, which lead to a rather forgettable performance on his part.

Finally, I'll mention Fisher Stevens, though not for anything positive. His genuinely very poor and appropriating accent really took me out of the film at times and was as distracting as it was poorly aged.

Overall, thid was a fun, if not overly special sci-fi comedy with plenty of laughs throughout - although I think the character arcs for some were a little sloppy. That said, this was pretty enjoyable.
