It's hard to believe I had never watched the second ever full length disney animation in full until now. I didn't even know how it ended, which feels scandalous. Produced by Walt Disney himself and co-directed by Ben Sharpsteen and Hamilton Luske, this 1940 film may only have a runtime of just 88 minutes, but it packs in a whole lot of story into that.
The film takes audiences on a wild and bizarre ride that borders on dark at points - but all the while creates a magical adventure with plenty of fun and music for families to enjoy.
The film's protagonist is voiced by Dickie Jones, who provides a wonderfully innocent and friendly performance that is remarkably endearing and delightful.
Cliff Edwards is another who gives a good performance, he manages to show his character's sincerity and thriftiness very succinctly.
Finally, I'll mention Christian Rub, who perfectly portrays his character's paternal and kind-hearted nature. There were other characters, but these three were the main ones who deserved mentions.
Overall, this has a lot of implicit dark themes, but for the most part, it's a highly enjoyable family adventure that everyone can enjoy, even several decades after its original release.
