Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018) Dir: Christopher McQuarrie

Instagram post:

The sixth film in the franchise has had some extraordinary reviews, which excited me greatly, as I'm sure you can imagine. It also marked the first time two films in the series had the same director; Christopher Mcquarrie.

Stylistically, this was a beautiful film to watch. There were numerous shots that I found stunning and satisfying. Even the simple, less flashy shots were done very well. There was, however, one really quite poor moment of CGI, but it was barely noticeable unless you looked for it.

The choreography and cinematography of the car sequences were especially exemplary, but I was also very impressed with the myriad of action scenes that took place. Each one was laced with significance and were all executed phenomenally.

The story was action-packed, intense, emotional and totally thrilling. I was hooked from start to finish thanks to the on point pacing. Admittedly, one of the film's main twists was rather predictable, but it was still a good one. I loved the film's conclusion, it epitomised what the franchise has been all about.

Tom Cruise, well I to his 50s, seemed intent on pushing his mind and body to the limit, and ultimately performed some of the best, most insane stunts I've seen in cinema. I also think this was his best performance, as far as acting goes, in a long time.

Henry Cavill finally gave the franchise a strong antagonist - the first since the third film. He was formidable, smooth, charismatic and very deadly. The only negative thing I can say about his performance was that his American accent needed work.

Ving Rhames has made a habit of being the heart of this action franchise. He always has some very heartwarming scenes, and his work with Cruise, in particular, always proves to be enjoyable.

Simon Pegg has another strong showing, although this time he feels a little more like part of the crowd so-to-speak. Regardless, I still enjoyed him as much as ever. He continues to have some of the funniest moments in each film.

Rebecca Ferguson returns to the franchise with a very good performance, which helped add an extra layer of depth, not only to her character, but those around her too - namely Cruise. She is one of the characters I have become most invested in, despite her relatively brief spell in the films.

Sean Harris had a much more enjoyable time of it in his second appearance. I think he serves the franchise better as a supporting antagonist. Harris capitalised far more on the scenes he was in this time around, of that I have no doubt.

I also thoroughly enjoyed the acting performances of Angela Bassett, Vanessa Kirby, Michelle Monoghan and Alec Baldwin, who were all really commendable in their supporting roles.

Overall, this is, without a doubt, the best film in the franchise. It had intensity, absurdly high stakes and incredible action sequences. I really appreciated that the film pays homage to the prior films, while also carving a pathway towards the future of the franchise.
