How To Train Your Dragon (2010) Dir: Dean DeBlois & Chris Sanders

Instagram post:

I've noticed that, in the last 6 months or so, I have returned to the films that I found comfort and joy in as a child. One of those films was, and is, this 2010 family adventure, directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders.

What makes it so good is a combination of wonderful vocal performances, John Powell's incredible soundtrack, an exciting adventure and a heartwarming story. Furthermore, the level of representation, in regards to the two protagonist's characteristics, is really nice to see.

The aforementioned story is one of morals and adventure, with the conflict between characters driving the plot forward to great effect. A slew of likeable characters and satisfying development of said characters, aids this film in being undeniably easy to get along with.

Jay Baruchel makes for a really solid casting choice as the film's protagonist, his ability to express his character's strengths and weaknesses is really satisfying, particularly in terms of the evolution of his character from beginning to end.

Gerard Butler gives a commendable vocal performance in his own right. Not only is his accent work decent, but the way he conveys emotion is very impressive, particularly in terms of the context of his character.

America Ferrera is another to give a good account of herself here. She gets better throughout the course of the story, and manages to create a believable chemistry between herself and Baruchel.

Finally, I'll mention some of the most enjoyable members of a strong supporting cast; Jonah Hill, Craig Furguson, Kristen Wiig, T.J. Miller, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and David Tennant.

Overall, there is a reason why this film has stayed as popular as ever, and that it because it mixes adventure, comedy and thrill brilliantly, allowing it to be a story that people of all ages can enjoy. It's one of the best book adaptations I've seen, and I will always come back to this film when I need something to cheer me up.
