Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet Of Curiosities (2022) Cre: Guillermo del Toro

Instagram post:

I must admit, I love a good anthology series, and this collection of 8 stories, presented by Guillermo del Toro, is certainly worth viewing. Released onto Netflix in 2022, this anthology of quirky horrors and thrillers was a lot more varied than I had anticipated.

They all had pretty good production value, and contained plenty of Guillermo del Toro's signature aesthetics and imagery to enjoy. My personal favourites would be Episode 2; 'Graveyard Rats', Episode 7; 'The Viewing' and Episode 8; 'The Murmuring'.

A couple of them were a little weaker to me, namely Episode 4; 'The Outside' - which had a great message but didn't quite succeed in delivering on the story's potential, and Episode 6; 'Dreams In The Witch House', which had a good concept, but was damaged by a weird character and an even weirder ending.

The series had a surprisingly star-studded cast, with the best performances coming from the likes of David Hewlett, Ben Barnes, Crispin Glover, Eric André and Andrew Lincoln.

As far as the rest of the cast goes, the other notable performances, albeit of slightly lesser quality than those mentioned above, come from Tim Blake Nelson, Glynn Turman, Kate Micucci, Rupert Grint and Sofia Boutella.

Overall, this was an intriguing set of short films with plenty to enjoy, despite a little inconsistency, which is to be expected by the variety of narratives and directors. That said, I'd quite happily watch another series of these strange little horrors.
