Gone Girl (2014) Dir: David Fincher

Instagram post:

I have been looking forward to watching this 2014 thriller, based on Gillian Flynn's novel of the same name, for quite some time. It is directed by David Fincher, a master of the genre - something that is clear when watching this film. The narrative is very intriguing - it tells its story in three acts, which is not unusual, but the well-defined manner in which they are shown is very satisfying.

The story arcs eb and flow steadily, and ultimately build to their respective climaxes and twists immensely well, especially the midpoint twist and the climactic moment of the film, which are both executed extremely well.

Ben Affleck stars and, while he can be very hit or miss at times, I think he was most definitely on the mark here. He feels very believable for the most part, although he is outshone by his co-star by a noticeable amount, but not due to his shortcomings by any means.

Rosamund Pike is incredible in her prevalent role, with this role bringing out the best in her abilities. She has a snap to her which really works, and makes each moment she's on-screen easy to invest in.

Carrie Coon featured far more than i initially expected, but that actually proved to be a very good choice, as not only does her character provide extra intrigue in the plot and character arcs, but Coon's performance is very strong, especially in the middle portion of the film.

Kim Dickens started rather strong, but did ultimately fade just a little bit towards the end of the film. That said, I think all-in-all she was pretty decent.

Finally, I'd like to give mentions to some of the phenomenal supporting cast; Patrick Fugit, Emily Ratajkowski, Tyler Perry, Lola Kirke, Neil Patrick Harris and Lisa Banes.

Overall, this was a tense, illusive and intricately formed thriller with plenty of mystery to keep audiences guessing, and a number of twists that take the story to unexpected but interesting places. I thoroughly enjoyed this, particularly the second half, which was executed very well.
