Constantine (2005) Dir: Francis Lawrence

Based on the Hellblazer comic series, this 2005 fantasy horror film from director Francis Lawrence is full of gritty action and twisted religious imagery that draws you in for the full 2 hour runtime.

The characterisation is lacking in most characters and plot is pretty weak, but honestly the film gets away with it thanks to the excellence of Keanu and the solid action scenes. Of course, some of the visuals are a little dated, but not only is that to be expected, it doesn't actually take a whole lot away from the viewing experience.

Keanu Reeves gives a performance that serves as foreshadowing for his far greater John Wick roles. There are signs of his great acting, but he doesn't quite reach those levels. I still enjoyed him in this though.

Rachel Weisz didn't quite shine as brightly, or consistently, as her co-stars, but I still thought she did a reasonable, if a little forgettable, job in her co-starring role.

Shia LeBouf was actually pretty fun in his supporting role. He did randomly disappear for a great chunk of the film, but for the scenes he was in, I think he was quite entertaining.

Tilda Swinton proved to be a very good casting choice, as her mix of unique aesthetic and costume design mixed very well with her well-established acting pedigree. Im actually surprised that she is not talked about more in connection with this role.

I'll also mention some of the other noteworthy cast members; Max Baker, Jesse Ramirez, Peter Stormare, Djimon Hounsou and Gavin Rossdale.

Overall, I think this film ended up being a worthwhile use of 2 hours. It's a combination of John Wick and Supernatural, and while it is certainly flawed, it sure as hell is a fun action film.
