Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) Dir: Wes Anderson

Instagram post:

I have a fairly long list of comfort films, but few elicit the desired feeling as much as this brilliant stop motion animation from director Wes Anderson, and based upon the classic Roald Dahl story. It's such a quick, easy and enjoyable watch, and one I think everyone should watch at least once.

The film is beautiful. I really love when stop motion is done well, and this is an example of the very best of that special form of animation. The characters look unique, the sets are pretty and the general aesthetic of the film is marvellous. When you match this with Anderson's trademark symmetry and use of colour, and you have a truly stunning animated adventure.

The film has a wholesome and rather groovy soundtrack, which perfectly accompanies the story and fits the film's aesthetics just as well. The sound, including the foley sound effects, was all on point, which only made everything that much more enjoyable.

The story has everything you want from a family adventure. It mixes adventure with comedy, family life, obvious villains, clear morals and a story that makes sure to be a whole lot of fun, and never takes itself too seriously. It has plenty of substance for those who want it, but never feels dense or convoluted.

George Clooney was the perfect casting choice to voice the titular fox. He brought out all his trademark cheek, wit and charisma, and made his protagonist both entirely memorable and undeniably likable.

Meryl Streep also lends her talents to one of the film's leading roles, and, unsurprisingly, delivers just as well. She was able to show that motherly, strong persona with ease, through her very strong voice acting.

There are so many names to mention, but the top voice performances from the supporting cast came from Jason Schwartzman, Wallace Wolodarsky, Eric Chase Anderson and Willem Dafoe. I really loved all of their contributions, though, I have to admit, I have a very soft spot for Dafoe's character - he's so Dafoe, it's great.

I also want to praise the voice acting of a number of others, including; Bill Murray, Robin Hurlstone, Hugo Guinness, Michael Gambon, Owen Wilson and Brian Cox, who all provided memorable performances, none more so than Gambon, who very much excelled.

Overall, this will always be a comfort film for me. It's so wonderful in just about every way and so easy to watch. It's without a doubt one of Anderson's best, and, in my opinion, one of the best films of the noughties. It's such an accessible and creative film, and a must-watch family film.
