Not many films from the last 20 or more years can really claim to be an original concept, but as far as I can see, this 2014 animation certainly can. I remember watching this when it came back and being in tears from laughing so much. And, for the most part, that is still true of my experience rewatching it in the years since then.
The always hilarious Bill Hader provides the voice of the film's protagonist, and gives a fun and immensely funny performance that made me laugh with ease.
Anna Faris plays the key supporting role, and while she isn't quite as funny as Hader, she still has plenty of entertainment value.
Andy Samberg is another actor who is always good for comedic value, and this role proves no different. His ability to be over the top and silly is at times unmatched.
Benjamin Bratt doesn't have a lot of lines, but delivers the ones he has really well, really selling his character's personality.
Neil Patrick Harris is almost always good value for money, and despite not having much in the way of dialogue variety, he nails it.
Finally, I'll mention Will Forte, Mr. T, Bruce Campbell and James Caan, each of whom had some very enjoyable moments, but had far less screentime than the aforementioned colleagues.
Overall, it's crazy to think that this film is well over a decade old now. Co-directors Phil Lord & Chris Miller do well to make sure this film is full of comedic moments, without any feeling overly forced or unnecessary. It still feels fresh and recent and never fails to entertain. It's a fun adventure that all the family can enjoy.
