Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) Dir: Gary Trousdale & Kirk Wise

Instagram post:

This Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise directed Disney cult classic is one that I watched countless times growing up, and loved every single time. It combines elements of history, sci-fi, mythology, adventure and even geography! It's such an exciting and creative journey to find one of history's most famous lost worlds.

I will always have a big appreciation for the animation used in these older Disney films; it's so nostalgic. Furthermore, the film features a myriad of unique and genuinely cool vehicle, character and world designs, which make this film feel truly one of a kind. Even the chosen time period adds some extra zest to everything.

The story is full of juice for all to enjoy, with a raft of interesting characters - including those with smaller roles, an exciting journey into the unknown, a clear call to adventure and so many fascinating little intricacies that make the film such an enjoyable experience to watch.

Michael J. Fox, who I had completely forgotten voice the film's protagonist, did a sterling job of providing a likable, funny and not too serious hero for the audience to get behind. His eagerness came through very clearly, which made me just as eager to see his journey.

Cree Summer and James Garner provided strong and enjoyable characters, particularly when interacting with Fox. I thought that Summer had some wonderfully fluent scenes, while Garner made for an excellent antagonist, whose voice perfectly matched his character's design.

As for the rest of the supporting cast, my favourite voice acting performances come from the trio of Claudia Christian, Phil Morris and Jacqueline Obradors. I also enjoyed the likes of Don Novello, Corey Burton, Leonard Nimoy, Florence Stanley and John Mahoney.

Overall, I will never grow tired of watching this wonderful animated adventure. It's one of the most underrated Disney films ever, in my view. I have a lot of nostalgic, sentimental love for the film, and I think it's clear to see why. It's an amazing voyage of discovery for all ages.
