Alien (1979) Dir: Ridley Scott

Instagram post:

Every year I rewatch this 1979 sci-fi horror, and every year I love it more and more. It just encapsulates so much if what makes cinema great, especially horror. It's one of Ridley Scott's best films, which is certainly saying something, and it remains one of the most talked about and influential pieces of cinema to-date.

The models and puppets will never not be cool to me. Sure, they're a little bit cheesy, but that'd part of the charm! The set and alien design is so good too, thanks to the creative mind of Scott and the brilliant and iconic concept art by H.R. Giger. I just adore how this film looks and feels.

It's so tense, so atmospheric, and so incredibly suspenseful. The use of darkness and sound is exquisite, especially with the beeping sensors. It's classic horror at it's best, in my opinion. No matter how many times I watch it, I still find it creepy, and I still love the scary moments.

The survival-based storyline is so good, and combined with the remote, claustrophobic setting; a spaceship, it makes for pretty much the perfect horror scenario. The film's success and influence is testament to just how effectively done all this was.

Sigourney Weaver rightly earns her place as one of horrors best and most iconic 'final girls' with this great performance. Her fear, her anger and her determination are so believable and palpable, its impossible not to root for her, and Jones the cat, to survive the Xenomorph.

Ian Holm gives one of his most memorable performances as the mysterious science officer, and the likes of Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright and Yaphet Kotto provide the film with some interesting side characters. Credit also should be given to the likes of Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Bolaji Badejo - the man in the xenomorph costume, and Helen Horton.

Overall, I will never stop rewatching this incredible film. It's one of the best examples of classic horror ever, and it still holds up pretty well, considering its age, today. It's just a masterpiece, I can't stress that enough. It will forever be one of my favourite films.
