World War Z (2013) Dir: Marc Forster

Ridley Coote

Instagram post:

When I was a teenager, I watched this Marc Forster directed zombie film and really loved it. I remember parts of it terrifying me - zombies that run! However, it has been several years since I've watched it, which felt like something I needed to change.

The use of 'Isolated System' by Muse as the film's main theme was an excellent choice for the soundtrack. It fit in so neatly with many of the film's themes. In fact, I'd say the soundtrack was one of the stronger aspects of the film in general - I really enjoyed it.

The film had some really decent cinematography, but also some really mediocre CGI. That said, part of this may have something to do with the age of the film and the jumps in CGI quality in the time since. 2013 sounds like yesterday, but it was over a decade ago now.

The narrative is, unfortunately, one of the weaker aspects of the film. Some really cool and scary events unfold, however, there's so many annoyingly convenient or inconvenient scenes, and some of the characters make strange or senseless choices. There's also one of the dumbest character deaths ever, which really seems so pointless.

Brad Pitt's leading performance was solid, if not exceptional. He was very good at certain points in the film, but some of the more emotive moments didn't come across as all-that convincing. He didn't feel like his character, he felt like Brad Pitt, which I guess is a more damming critique.

The supporting cast come and go quite regularly in the story, so nobody really makes the biggest impact other than Pitt himself. However, the best of those who do appear are Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale and Peter Capaldi.

I'll also give mentions to several others who gave fairly compelling performances, despite not really getting that much screentime; Ludi Boeken, Fana Mokoena and Pierfrancesco Favino. I do wish Favino in particular had been given more screentime, because his character was actually pretty interesting.

Overall, I must admit, this horror was both better and worse than I remembered it being, to varying degrees. It wasn't anywhere near as scary as I recall it being when I was younger, but some of it was still pretty solid. It's certainly rewatchable, if that's anything to go by.
