Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory (1971) Dir: Mel Stuart

Instagram post:

A classic of 70s cinema - this Mel Stuart directed musical affair is based on the iconic book by Roald Dahl. It may be slightly dated by today's standards, but that does not mean it isn't entertaining and funny.

Far From it, it is very enjoyable and, in my view, better than the 2005 version of the same story. Whilst it is not as visually spectacular by any means, it makes up for it with a genuine charm and care that leaves the newer addition in its chocolaty wake.

Gene Wilder gives what is without a doubt one of his most iconic performances, and manages to show his acting quality readily. His performance really steers the ship and guides this film very effectively.

Meanwhile, Peter Ostrum also gives a good account of himself as Charlie. His on-screen chemistry with Grandpa Joe is wonderful.

Speaking of which, Jack Albertson, who plays him, also gives a fun performance, which was highly entertaining - as it needed to be.

Overall, it's hard not to love this 1971 classic. It just has so many little iconic moments and deserves its place in cinema history.
