The Wizard Of Oz (1939) Dor: Victor Fleming

Victor Fleming's 1939 adaptation of the classic novel by L. Frank Baum is one of the greatest and most universally loved films of all-time. It would be a serious challenge to find someone in the Western world especially who has not at least heard of this musical adventure, which is testament to its endurance, considering it isn't all that far away from being a hundred years old.

I think what's impressive about this grand old film is just how well its aged, relatively speaking, at least. Sure, the costumes and sets are very clearly just that, but, for me at least, that's part of the magic and charm of Dorothy's adventure. It's a magical, vibrant, and fantastical place.

Some of the visual effects were undeniably advanced for the time, and that transition from black and white to colour is truly unforgettable. Everything is accompanied by a an iconic soundtrack, including the wonderful musical numbers, which have remained favourites of musical and film fans for decades.

The story is a memorable adventure, which had all the typical trademarks of a golden age Hollywood epic, with morals and companions and a true hero's journey to enjoy. It remains very watchable to-date, and has so many themes - friendship, teamwork, etc - that people can relate to no matter the era.

Judy Garland's performance of Dorothy is as iconic as the film, and was full of some very enjoyable acting. Her compelling singing makes her musical performances timeless, and her ability to exude wonder and passion makes her character so likable.

The trio of Ray Bolger, Jack Haley and Bert Lahr all play their supporting parts truly wonderfully, with each providing personality, flair, flamboyance and comedic acumen. Their physical acting was each of their biggest assets, with some of their dramatics being hugely entertaining.

The likes of Frank Morgan, Margaret Hamilton and Billie Burke all give the film plenty of extra character too. This is especially true of Hamilton, whose portrayal of the Wicked Witch of the West is so entertaining and so memorable.

Overall, I love revisiting this golden age Hollywood gem. I think it features all the glitz and the glamour of the period, as well as some of the ingenuity, and remains one of the film's everyone should watch at least once in their lifetime. The film being an all-time classic is indisputable, and for good reason.
