Star Wars: The Clone Wars [Season 1] (2008) Dir: Dave Filoni
In 2008, George Lucas created a new animated series that would go on to become one of his most popular and beloved creations.
Introduced by a feature length film of the same name earlier that year, the Dave Filoni directed series provides a host of new stories, characters and action that gave fans, particularly those growing up alongside the series, a new wave of content to enjoy.
This first 22 episode season in particular holds a lot of sentimental value for me, as I was a child when this came out. I remember borrowing the DVDs from the library so my siblings and I could watch it. The stories might be aimed more at children, but they also tackle some pretty adult and dark themes such as loss and guilt.
Matt Lanter voices Anakin, and provides consistently good performances that help to emphasise his character's developments throughout the season. His comedic timing would improve in later seasons, but it isn't bad here either.
Ashley Eckstein is one of the show's best original characters, introduced in the film that preceeded this, and helps her character be one of the most likeable and endearing characters in the Star Wars universe.
James Arnold Taylor is my personal favourite actor in this season. His voice is so accurate to Ewan McGregor's live action version of the character and he gets that trademark wit and wisdom absolutely right throughout the season.
Dee Bradley Baker, who has also voiced characters in productions like 'Spongebob SquarePants' and 'Avatar: The Last Airbender', voices Captain Rex and the other clones throughout the series, and honestly he was the perfect casting choice - his vocal performance is varied and consistent.
The versatile Tom Kane provides the voices of Yoda and Admiral Yularen, as well as narrating each episodes opening. He is remarkably consistent in each of his supporting roles, his voices all unique and up to scratch.
Finally, I'll name some of the cast that deserved a mention, but for the sake of time, I'm not going to go in depth on; Ian Abercrombie, Terrence C. Carson, the returning Anthony Daniels, Nika Futterman, Matthew Wood and Catherine Taber.
Overall, even watching this over a decade after its release and my first watch, I still love it and it still has so much to appreciate as a fan. This isn't my favourite season of the show, but it is close. I can't help but adore this series.
