Star Wars: Revenge Of The Sith [Episode III] (2005) Dir: George Lucas

Instagram post:

This 2005 film completes the prequel trilogy in some style, easily being seen as the best of the 3 films. Visually, this film surpasses its predecessors easily, in particular for the space sequences.

The use of colour and general cinematography is a vast improvement too. The composition of John Williams is once again masterful, particularly for the most climactic and emotional scenes.

The dialogue here is also much better, with some hilarious comedic moments that I don't think I appreciated so much the first time. I do think this one goes a bit overboard with the CGI, it was a struggle to see much if any physical effects, which as those who know me will know, is a big shame to me.

The overall narrative is the most functional and enjoyable of the prequels, with the culmination of the trilogy completing the origins of the Empire, and what transpires in the original trilogy. The film has some of my favourite moments of any Star Wars film, particularly in the final hour or so, where the film's quality is truly something to behold.

As far as the acting goes, Hayden Christensen once again returns as Anakin, and has a much better run of it here. The writing of his character is much better in fairness, but I will not discredit what is also a much better acting performance.

Ewan McGregor continues his consistently good run as Obi-Wan, he manages to keep up with the emotion of the darker scenes quite well, which, with the content of said scenes, is no mean feat.

Natalie Portman has her moments here, but is far more of a background character here, which was a little bit of a shame, although you can argue most of her role in the narrative was completed in the prior film.

Ian McDiarmid has arguably his best performance as the sinister Palpatine here, his ability to bring out the evil in his character was easy to appreciate.

Frank Oz gives a decent voice performance to Yoda again here, and with an increase in dialogue, he gets more opportunity to shine as the acclaimed Jedi master.

Samuel L. Jackson is another actor who gives his best Star Wars performance in this film, he gives a commanding performance in each of his scenes, he remains one of the coolest characters in the whole saga.

Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker reprise their roles predictably as C-3PO and R2-D2, and continue to build upon that particular inter-character relationship well.

Perhaps the only major disappointment I have is that Christopher Lee didn't get more screentime. He is a brilliant antagonist, but has his minutes slashed in favour of another supporting antagonist.

Speaking of which, Matthew Wood provides the voice for said character; General Grievious, who has become a brilliant Star Wars villain in other projects such as The Clone Wars series, but felt like an unnecessary addition here. He also suffers the Darth Maul treatment of being criminally underutilised.

Finally, I'll mention a couple of supporting actors who gave noteworthy performances, despite having less screentime; Temuera Morrison as Commander Cody and the other Clone troopers, Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca and Jimmy Smits as Bail Organa.

Overall, I have to say this is, and always has been, one of my top 3 Star Wars films, thanks in no small part to the excellent lightsaber sequences, emotionally devastating moments and superb music score. This one makes the prequel trilogy all worth it...except Jar Jar...nothing good came of that character.

I digress, this is a genuinely very good outing in the Star Wars universe and sets up the original trilogy superbly.
