Punisher: Season 1 (2017) Dir: Tom Shankland

After learning that the Netflix original Marvel series were to be removed from the streaming service, I felt like it was time to watch them at last. I chose to start with this one because honestly, it appealed to me the most initially.

I had an idea of what to expect from it, and I'm happy to say it delivered on that. This first series is intense, gritty and wonderfully violent. It's dark themes saturate the story very nicely and give the perfect feel for Frank Castle's twisted story.

The narrative is better crafted than most MCU projects I've seen so far and develops well throughout the 13 episode run in this season. The drama and jeopardy permeates each episode and does not let up from beginning to end.

The series also takes a deep and harrowing look at the psychological and physical traumas of war - which facilitates some fascinating character developments and interactions.

John Bernthal stars as Castle and once again shows how unrelentingly talented he is. Ebon Moss-Bachrach backs Bernthal up in one of the more prominent roles, and helps create an interesting dynamic between the two characters.

Also featuring heavily is Ben Barnes, who I really enjoyed the performance of here. Amber Rose Revah gives what is majoritarily a very good performance too, as does Jaime Ray Newman in her supporting role.

Jason R. Moore plays what is possibly my favourite character of the series, something that is hugely thanks to his acting throughout. I also want to give some big credit to Daniel Webber, who gives a commendable performance in a complex and difficult role.

Overall, this first series does exactly what it needs to in order to properly present the character of Frank Castle to viewers, including those who perhaps do not know him from Marvel comics.

The intense nature and near hour long episodes can make this one a little challenging to binge watch, but I promise you, it will have you riveted and engaged everytime you sit down to watch it.
