Moonrise Kingdom (2012) Dir: Wes Anderson

Instagram post:

Director Wes Anderson is renowned and loved for his unique take on cinema. He loves to use symmetry, colour and retro camera styles.

What this does is make each of his films feel very unique to anything else you see, especially in the mainstream, but allows you to identify the creator instantly. Anderson's auteurship is truly one to be admired.

This film has so much to love. The "Super 16" style of camerawork is so wonderful and had a real 70s retro feel. The lines, symmetry and shapes on the screen are all immensely satisfying too.

Furthermore, you'd be hard pressed to find a film with a better use of colour throughout. The narrative is simple in its complexity, but works beautifully to construct a highly enjoyable and quirky story.

This is lifted by each of the performances of the main cast, which is a pretty star studded array by the way. Jared Gilman and Kara Kaywood play the two protagonists, and each do well to produce an Anderson-style performance, as well as giving their character's some nice little nuances too.

It was really nice to see Bruce Willis in a much more wholesome production, and can I say I really enjoyed what he gave us here. I also have nothing but positives to sat about Edward Norton, who was really fun in this one.

Bill Murray and Frances McDormand work really well together, McDormand especially brings a good performance.

Tilda Swinton and Harvey Keitel also appear in more minor roles but it was so clear to see that they, along with everyone else in this, were having fun and enjoying what they were making - it really comes across on the screen.

A truly delightful film that I think anyone could and would enjoy.
