This follow up to the acclaimed horror film, based on the same book by Stephen King, follows the events 27 years after the original film. The narrative was weaker than the prior film, but still had some well crafted moments.

I have to say, the characters were far more likeable as children - there is just something distinctly less enjoyable with the adult versions of the characters.

Visually, the film rather dark and dreary for the most part, which is typical of horror film in fairness, but still a little disappointing.

Finn Wolfhard, Jaeden Martell, Sophia Lillis, Wyatt Oleff, Jeremy Ray Taylor and Chosen Jacobs all return as the young versions of the protagonists. They don't have much screentime but are each enjoyable in their scenes.

James McAvoy is the standout of the older characters, with his undeniable acting credentials coming through better than his colleagues.

Bill Hader tries and unfortunately fails to match the likeability of Finn Wolfhard. It's a shame because Hader is usually a very solid actor.

Jessica Chastain does the best with what she is given here, though isn't able to have the same energy as her younger self.

James Ransone is pretty forgettable for the most part, but he does at least have one good scene. Jay Ryan struggles to show any real personality compared to his colleagues.

Isaiah Mustafa is the one character who improves upon his younger actor's performance, with his character having some of the most pivotal moment.

Finally, the returning Bill Skarsgård continues to shine as the terrifying killer clown, although the effectiveness of his character has somewhat faded from the sheer scare factor of the first film.

There's also a great little cameo from Stephen King, which was really good to see. Director Andrés Muschietti did reasonably well with the source material, but fails to match the popularity and quality of the previous film.

The 2 hours and 49 minute runtime drags thanks to some pacing issues too, so this one feels longer than it needs to. Regardless, this was pretty solid for a horror film and sequel.
