Into The Wild (2007) Dir: Sean Penn

"Some people feel like they don't deserve love. They walk away quietly into empty spaces, trying to close the gaps of the past."

This was a visceral, wild and inspiring film based on the true story of Chris McCandless. And what a truly surreal story it was. The film's pacing was slow, but flowed well - it perfectly matched the feel of the story.

'Christopher Johnson McCandless, also known by his pseudonym "Alexander Supertramp", was an American adventurer who sought an increasingly nomadic lifestyle as he grew up.' - Wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_McCandless

Visually, this film was simple, yet beautiful. Furthermore, the soundtrack was immaculate, thanks in no small part to the contributions of 'Pearl Jam' member; Eddie Vedder.

The narrative is spiritual and moving - it takes a unique look at life and society, told through the actions of McCandless and the words he wrote on his journeys.

Emile Hirsch portrays the would-be adventurer, providing what is a simultaneously uplifting and poignant performance.

Brian H. Dierker and Catherine Keener play my personal favourite supporting characters, each producing heartwarming and remarkably endearing performances.

Another man who gives a wonderful performance is Hal Holbrook, who's involvement is both heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time, thanks in no small part to his acting.

Jena Malone provides the voice overs of Chris's real life sister Carine, as well as a couple of filmed scenes here and there, and supports the story well.

A 17 year old Kristen Stewart provides a decent performance in a supporting role, in what is one of her earliest feature film roles.

Other supporting performances of note come from Marcia Gay Hayden William Hurt and Vince Vaughn.

Overall, this film opened my eyes to a lot of new thoughts and perspectives, and makes me want to read both the book the film is partially based upon, and another book, which was written by the sister Carine.

Iconic actor Sean Penn directs and produces what is an extremely well made and acted story that left a real impact on me as a viewer.
