Inside Man (2006) Dir: Spike Lee

So, this is another one of those films I likely would've missed if not for someone else deciding to out it on. That said, I'm actually pretty glad I watched it.

It has to be considered one of the blueprints for many of the modern day heist movies we've seen in the years since. Yes, the film has a number of tropes of the genre, but then again, the heist movie archetype hadn't really been as overdone and oversaturated as it is now.

Even watching it now however, the tropy moments didn't really bother me, as the rest if the film did well to make up for it.

The narrative is pretty enthralling, although with modern eyes it is a little bit predictable, but that isn't exactly the film's fault I don't think. As long as you don't mind that, it won't take away from your overall enjoyment and engagement.

The film, admittedly to my surprise, is directed by Spike Lee. He has a very commendable directorial view and has made some brilliant films.

Starring here is the iconic and ever-talented Denzel Washington, who gives a very solid performance in the headlining role. He is supported by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who does well to keep up with Washington here.

Opposite them is Clive Owen, who's quieter, more deliberate approach doubles down on the tone of the film quite satisfyingly. Another supporting performance of note is that of Willem Dafoe, whom I am always a fan of.

Joining him in the more minor roles, though still worthy of mentioning, are Jodie Foster and Christopher Plummer, each providing decent performances of their own.

My overall thoughts are that this is a really solid heist film that has aged pretty damn well considering it is now 16 years old. It's certainly not a bad choice of entertainment for an evening.
