Hit Man (2024) Dir: Richard Linklater

Richard Linklater's Netflix original action romcom has been pretty popular this year, but, until recently, I hadn't really had much interest in watching it. However, after seeing a clip or two from it, I was enticed enough to give it a watch.

I found it to be a quirky little film, which didn't take itself too seriously, but also didn't push it too far to be cringe. I enjoyed the romantic aspect of the story; I thought it was pretty cute and wholesome, and it felt like the two protagonists had good chemistry.

On that point, while the narrative wasn't world-beating or anything, I enjoyed it a fair bit. It didn't end how I thought it would, but I didn't really mind that. It was a little bit jarring, sure, and it felt like there was story left on the table, but for the film it was, the ending was fine.

Glen Powell showed some of his versatility in this lead role, and I have to say I quite enjoyed how silly he was. This was one of those films where it really felt like the actors were having fun with it, and no one looked like they were having more fun than Powell was.

I will admit, I very much enjoyed the acting of Adria Arjona. She was flirtatious, she was funny, and she could switch on the serious side when required. It was a really enjoyable performance all-in-all, and she pretty much nailed it.

Austin Amelio was kind of mediocre, and his character wasn't the best written guy in the world, but they both filled their role adequately enough. The same can be said of Retta and Sanjay Rao, who, while only appearing briefly, provided a few tidbits of entertainment here and there.

Overall, this was a fun and very silly film, which I did quite enjoy. It definitely didn't take itself too seriously, and while the story was a bit odd in its execution, I could happily watch this one again in the future and enjoy it just as much.
