Ang Lee's iconic gay romance is a beautiful piece of cinema in so many ways. Visually, the film takes advantage of its picturesque setting to create some scenic and stunning shots. The story mixes the romance and tragedy so masterfully that the audience can't help but feel every high and low that the characters experience.

Lee manages to tell this complicated and poignant story so effectively that it feels well ahead of its time. I do not always enjoy romances, but I felt this was done brilliantly. The film also has a multitude of significant performances from its stellar cast.

Heath Ledger gives what is, to me, his best ever performance in this leading role. The way he presents his vulnerability and masculinity in vicious duality is masterful, and the moments where his emotions do show are hugely impactful. This was truly a generational performance.

Jake Ghyllenhaal's performance is very nearly as good too. He has always had an immense talent for emoting, and this may be one of the best examples of it. Like Ledger, the way Ghyllenhaal shows his emotions is something to behold, and the believability of his love is a huge part of what makes the film so powerful.

Michelle Williams has a performance that should be talked about so much more than it is, although the performances of the two leading actors may be behind that. But, in all honesty, I thought she was genuinely amazing in her supporting role.

Anne Hathaway may not have had the screentime of the three prior mentioned names, but she gave a very commendable performance inspite of that.

I would also like to give credit to some of the more minor appearances that still deserve to be mentioned; Linda Cardellini, Anna Faris, David Harbour and Randy Quaid.

Overall, there is no denying that this is a beautiful film. It has a sincerity in its emotional heart that is so rare in the vast majority of storytelling. This is, in my view, one of the best romances ever made. In fact, I'd argue its one of the best films ever made too.
